Questions about our range of handmade bowls?
Yes. All bowls in this collection are fired to cone 6 temperature, which vitrifies the clay fully - making it food safe, non-porous, and sealed. The pasta bowls are made from cone 6 midfire porcelain; the oyster bowls are white speckled cone 6 midfire. Both clays are food-grade materials fired to the same standard as commercial ceramic tableware. The glazes are non-toxic and fully sealed after the glaze fire.
Quite a lot. The wide-rim format makes them a natural fit for pasta, of course, but they work just as well as a ceramic salad bowl, a ceramic serving bowl for a shared dish on the table, or a generous breakfast bowl. The wide mouth makes plating and sharing easy. If you're looking for a ceramic pasta bowl that pulls double duty at the table, these are it.
Yes - each bowl is made by hand in Rhiannon's Bellambi studio on the NSW South Coast. The pasta bowls are produced from porcelain and trimmed individually before glazing; the dark clay oyster bowls are handbuilt from rich dark midfire clay. Every piece is brush-glazed and fired twice in a cone 6 kiln. Because each one is made individually, no two are exactly alike.

Yes - all bowls in this collection are dishwasher safe. Cone 6 fired clay is dense and durable, and the glaze is fully sealed after the glaze fire. All of the bowls can go in the dishwasher without issue.
Yes. All bowls in this collection are microwave safe. Cone 6 fired ceramics handle microwave use well - the clay is fully vitrified. Safe to heat food directly in the bowl.
Yes - the pasta bowls and oyster bowls are available in a range of glaze colourways. Each colourway is named (for example, Galaxy, Blossom, Marshmallow) and because each piece is brush-glazed by hand, the exact distribution of colour shifts slightly from bowl to bowl. Stock changes with each batch, so check the collection page for what is currently available. If you have a specific colourway in mind, email hello@rhiannongillceramics.com and we can let you know if it is coming up.
Each bowl is wrapped and packed individually in a double-walled cardboard box with biodegradable packing peanuts. The packaging is designed to protect handmade ceramics during transit - we have shipped hundreds of pieces Australia-wide and around the globe without breakage. Every order ships with full tracking from dispatch. If a piece arrives damaged, email hello@rhiannongillceramics.com with a photo and we will sort it out.
Not as pre-packaged sets - but if you want a matching pair or a group in the same colourway, get in touch before ordering. Stock permitting, we can often hold pieces together. Because each mug is made individually, no two are exactly alike even within the same colourway, but they'll still form a beautiful set. Ordering multiples at once gives you the best chance of colour consistency.
The main difference is in the glaze and the finish. Mass-produced ceramic bowls use machine-applied or dipped glazes that produce a uniform coat. These pottery bowls are brush-glazed by hand, which means the depth and layering of colour is different on every piece. The glaze pools slightly at the base, shifts with the kiln atmosphere, and has a texture that you can see and feel. Cone 6 firing also produces a brighter and more sustainable result than the lower temperature firing used in most commercial ceramics.
Yes - handmade ceramic bowls make a genuinely good gift for people who cook or care about what's on their table. Each piece comes packaged carefully and ships tracked Australia-wide. If you are buying as a gift and want to include a note, add a message in the order notes at checkout and we will include it with the parcel.
