Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question? You'll find the most common ones answered below. If something's missing, get in touch via the contact page or at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com.
Ceramics Care
Are your ceramics dishwasher safe?
Yes — all Rhiannon Gill Ceramics pieces are dishwasher safe. Hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the glaze and keep your pieces looking their best for longer. Avoid harsh abrasive scrubbers, as these can dull the glaze surface over time.
Are your ceramics microwave safe?
Yes — all pieces are microwave safe and suitable for everyday use.
Are your ceramics oven safe?
Yes — all pieces are oven safe. Avoid sudden temperature extremes: don't place a cold piece directly into a very hot oven or transfer it from the oven to a cold surface. Gradual temperature changes will help your ceramics last for many years.
How should I care for my handmade ceramics?
All pieces are food safe, dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and oven safe — but a little care goes a long way. Hand washing with mild dish soap is the best way to preserve the glaze and keep your ceramics looking beautiful long-term.
The most important thing to avoid is sudden thermal shock — don't take a piece straight from the fridge and fill it with boiling water, and avoid placing hot ceramics directly on cold surfaces.
Store pieces where they won't knock against each other — the rims and foot rings are the most vulnerable points.
What should I do if my ceramic chips?
Minor chips to the foot ring or base don't affect the usability of a piece and are a normal part of owning handmade ceramics. If a rim chips and creates a sharp edge, a little fine wet-and-dry sandpaper (600 grit) can gently smooth it down.
If your piece arrived damaged in transit, please contact us within 2 days — see the Orders & Returns section below for details.
Shipping & Delivery
How much does shipping cost?
Australian shipping is a flat rate of $15. Orders over $190 ship free.
International shipping is available — please contact us after placing your order for a personalised shipping quote.
How long will my order take to arrive?
Orders are typically packed and dispatched within 1–2 business days. Once shipped, domestic delivery takes approximately 2–3 business days for most locations in Australia.
For pre-order items, please check the estimated completion timeframe listed on the product page — these pieces are made to order and will take longer.
International delivery timeframes vary by destination — contact us for an estimate.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, international shipping is available. Because ceramics are fragile and costs vary by destination, we handle international orders on a case-by-case basis. Place your order and then get in touch for a personalised quote before dispatch.
Can you ship to a PO Box or Parcel Locker?
Unfortunately not — due to the fragile nature of handmade ceramics, a physical street address is required for delivery.
How is my order packaged?
Every piece is packed securely using eco-friendly materials, including biodegradable packing peanuts to cushion against bumps in transit. We take packaging seriously — ceramics are fragile, and we want your order to arrive exactly as it left the studio.
My order arrived damaged — what do I do?
Please get in touch within 5 days of receiving your delivery with a description of the damage and a photo showing the broken item in its damaged packaging.
We cannot process refunds without this information, so please don't discard the packaging before photographing it. Contact us via the contact page or at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com.
Products & Making
What materials do you use?
All pieces are made from stoneware clay, fired at high temperature to create a dense, durable, food-safe ceramic. Rhiannon makes her own glazes and applies them by hand, which is part of what gives each piece its distinctive character and natural variation.
Are your ceramics food safe?
Yes. All Rhiannon Gill Ceramics pieces are food safe and suitable for everyday use with food and drink.
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
Very similar — but not identical. Every piece is made entirely by hand and glazes are brushed on individually, so natural variations occur. The colour, texture, and form may vary slightly from the photos.
This is part of what makes handmade ceramics special — no two pieces are exactly alike. The variation is a feature, not a flaw.
Why do handmade ceramics cost more than mass-produced pottery?
Each piece is made from start to finish by one person — throwing, trimming, drying, bisque firing, hand glazing, and a final glaze firing. From raw clay to finished piece, the process takes days, not minutes.
Factor in years of developed skill, materials, kiln electricity, and studio overhead — and the price reflects genuine craft. You're buying something made with intention, designed to last a lifetime.
Are your pieces one-of-a-kind?
Effectively, yes. While pieces from the same run will be similar in form and glaze, no two handmade ceramics are ever exactly identical. Natural variation in the clay, glaze application, and firing means each piece has its own subtle character.
How long does it take to make a piece?
From throwing on the wheel to finished piece, the process typically takes one to two weeks — factoring in drying (1–3 days), a bisque firing (~8 hours), hand glazing, a glaze firing (8–12 hours), and cooling time.
Even a single mug involves throwing, trimming, handle attachment, drying, two firings, and glazing. It's a slow, considered process — which is reflected in the result.
Orders & Returns
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) as well as PayPal, Afterpay, Shop Pay, and other popular options available at checkout.
Do you offer gift wrapping?
Yes — gift wrapping is available. Simply leave a note at checkout with your gift message and any special requests, and we'll take care of the rest.
Do you have gift cards?
Yes — gift cards are available in the shop. They're a great option if you'd like to let someone choose their own piece.
Can I return or exchange my order?
If you're not entirely happy with what you receive, please get in touch within 5 working days of receiving your delivery. If a return is agreed upon, goods must be returned unused and in their original packaging within 7 days. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer.
Where a return is not due to a fault on our end, a store credit will be issued rather than a refund.
I've changed my mind — can I cancel my order?
Please email us as soon as possible at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com. If your order hasn't been processed yet, we're happy to make changes or cancel it. Once an order has been dispatched, we're unable to cancel — but you're welcome to initiate a return once it arrives.
When will sold-out items be restocked?
Many sold-out pieces are available to pre-order — add them to your cart and check the estimated completion timeframe on the product page.
For pieces not available to pre-order, follow along on Instagram or subscribe to the newsletter for restock announcements.
Custom Orders & Wholesale
Do you make custom or personalised orders?
One-off custom orders aren't available — each piece is made as part of a small batch. However, for larger quantities of a custom item (corporate gifting, event pieces, café commissions), please get in touch to discuss. Minimum quantities and lead times apply.
Do you offer wholesale?
Yes. If you're a retailer or stockist interested in carrying Rhiannon Gill Ceramics, a line sheet is available on request. Get in touch at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com for more information.
Can I order ceramics for corporate gifting?
Yes — handmade ceramics make a distinctive, lasting corporate gift and bulk orders are welcomed. Whether you need client gifts, event pieces, or staff presents, get in touch to discuss quantities, styles, and lead times at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com.
About the Studio
Where is the studio based?
The studio is located at Bellambi Commercial Centre in Wollongong, NSW, Australia — on Dharawal Country, nestled between the mountains and the sea. All pieces are made here, from start to finish.
Can I visit the studio in person?
Absolutely — you're welcome to visit the workshop at Bellambi Commercial Centre to browse in person or collect your order. Please get in touch first to confirm Rhiannon will be in the studio when you'd like to come by. Reach us via the contact page or at hello@rhiannongillceramics.com.
Do you teach pottery classes?
Pottery classes are occasionally run by request. If you have an idea in mind — a private session, a small group, or a special occasion — get in touch and tell us what you're thinking and how many people you'd like to bring.
Are your ceramics made sustainably?
Every piece is made consciously — small batch, by hand, with care. No mass production, no factory, no waste at scale. Rhiannon makes her own glazes, uses what she needs, and creates pieces designed to last years rather than seasons. Orders ship in eco-friendly packaging with biodegradable packing peanuts.
